The present aquatint etching is a characteristic graphic work by the Irish artist Seán Shanahan. It shows an abstract composition made of fine geometric lines that remind of the shape of a cross. The artist’s works usually have a slightly imbalanced character which is created by varying strengths of lines, here.

The aquatint etching is signed with monogram and numbered with pencil upper center ‘S.S 12/20’. It is verso numbered with pencil ‘C. 13.800’. The sheet is verso mounted on two points on cardboard. The dimensions of the plate are 64.5 x 44 cm and the sheet measures 69.5 x 50.3 cm. The dimensions of the framed work are 73.5 x 54.5 cm.



Seán Shanahan (b. 1960)

The painter and graphic artist Seán Shanahan was born in Dublin and is a representative of monochrome abstract art. He received his artistic training in London and Madrid. His works have been exhibited since the early 1980s throughout Europe; the presentations at the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery in Dublin, the Fondazione Scarampi in Italy and the Sleeper Gallery in Edinburgh may be considered as his most important solo-exhibitions. Works by Shanahan are part of many private and public collections in Europe, such as the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery in Dublin. The artist lives and works in Montevecchia since the late 1980s. (cbo)
