O’Sullivan was known primarily as a portrait artist; his finely drawn and
academic studies have much in common with Seán Keating. Máirín Allen called this
his “portrait-manner”, distinct from his “landscape-manner”, which was “a sort
of loose impressionism. In this vein he abandons the brush for the palette-knife
– a very flexible instrument in his hands – and applies his pigment with joyous
abandon, sometimes on wooden panels” (Father Mathew Record, March 1942; quoted
in Snoddy, op. cit., p.511).
