Literature:
Note: The title of this drawing is taken from a hymn titled From Greenland’s Icy Mountains written by Reginald Heber in 1819. The words of the hymn have become well-known as a call against prejudice of any type. The full line to which Keating refers is ‘Where every prospect pleases and nought but man is vile…’ Keating was an avid reader and it was not at all unusual for him to be inspired by literature and poetry. This drawing was made for the RHA exhibition in 1964, and the image of the woman with the horse is based on a photograph which came into the artist’s possession at the time. The architectural reference to Florence Court is an artistic device to further expand the meaning of the work, in which Keating uses Heber’s lines as a call against narrow-mindedness.
