<B>Sculptor Hiram Powers Autograph Letter Signed.</B></I> American Sculptor. Autograph Letter Signed, one page 4to with integral address leaf, Florence, Feb. 7, 1840, to Senator George McDuffie (S. C.). A lengthy letter about shipping and payment for his bust of McDuffie, stating that he has <I>"...need of all the money I can obtain, so great are the expenses of my studio and family here..."</B></I> In a postscript, he asks to be remembered incase any public art project should arise in South Carolina. Powers had been in Italy for less than three years; he sailed to Europe with many plaster models for portrait busts to be carved in marble, and McDuffie's must have been one of them. Hiram Powers became a great success, and his home in Florence was a meeting place for important Americans abroad. Mounted by the top edge of the address leaf. Fine condition.
