This is a scrimshaw powder horn. This is a contemporary piece made using centuries old techniques. Scrimshaw is a form of art originally done by sailors. They would engrave scenes from the sea into whale bones, teeth, shells, etc. by hand to pass the time aboard the ship. This piece was hand engraved on horn, believed to be from a steer. It shows the Atlantic coastline of what is now New Jersey. The powder horn was made by Skip Hamaker and is dated 2001. It is in good condition. The horn measures 2.5" in diameter and is 16.5" long.
