Most of you know our good friend Scott McKay or at least have had the pleasure of meeting him in the neighbourhood.
Back in 2012, Scott was told something that 2 in 5 Canadians will hear at some point in their life; you have cancer. Scott endured surgeries, a stem cell transplant and radiation at Princess Margaret Hospital - it was along, tough road he had ahead of him. Along with the great care at PMH, his inspiring positivity and the support of his family and friends he’s still here 4 years later cracking wise at the 7th Street school yard each morning.
Over the last few years he has helped PMH's Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer to grow by lending his time and support along with his amazing who's who rolodex of hockey stars from his days with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He's done a lot of good and helped raise millions for cancer research but he wants to do more.
Something Scott noticed while he was undergoing treatment is just how much of an impact cancer has on your life. There is the obvious effect it has on your health but there are dozens of other things you have to worry about. Many can't work during treatment, most need to ask friends to drive them to appointments and then back home when they are done. Others may have to take transit or a cab. There is parking, medication, some need to make renovations to their homes so they can still live there. Those who can't work struggle to pay rent or phone bills. There are dozens of small - sometimes big - things that can distract you while all you should have to worry about is getting better. Some have friends and family to lean on when things get tough but some don’t.
Scott is proud of the work he's doing to help raise funds to further cancer research but he also wants to help raise funds for people who are living with cancer. To help with some of the day-to-day things that people in treatment worry about.
