Scottish Highland Dirk with Matching Knife and Fork Set, in Sheath

Developed independently from the naval dirk, the Highland Dirk was a popular sidearm during the Jacobite Risings, later growing to be part of the national dress of Scotland. Measuring 17 1/4 inches overall, the dirk is fitted with an 11 1/2 inch double fuller blade with a filework decorated spine. The silver finished brass collar is decorated with an engraved thistle, which runs in an infinite loop about the band, and the grip is carved hardwood with raised woven ribbon patterns, silver finished beading, and a thistle-patterned pommel with silver finished cap. The brown leather sheath has silver finished furniture, with the thistle design repeated on the tip, light border engraving on the throats, and a chain hanger on the rear. Also included with the sheath is a "mess kit" set of a knife (7 1/2 inch overall, 3 7/8 inch blade) and two-pronged fork (6 inch overall, 1 5/8 inch tines), with silver finished collars and matching style hardwood grips.

Fine overall. The blade shows mild spotting and handling marks, and is slightly loose in its mounting. The silver components show mild wear and a mixed patina, with some brass visible on the high edges and sheath fittings. The grips are very good, with attractive details. The leather shows mild cracks and scuffs.
