Scottish Basket Hilt Broadsword with 33” blade and 39” overall length. The sword was manufactured during the first quarter of the 18th century and is “FERRERA” marked on the blade indicating Andrea Ferrera. The sword is in overall good condition with mars and pitting consistent with age. The sword has an iron basket hilt guard with a wire wrapped leather grip and traditional rounded pommel. Ferrera was a Spaniard believed to have been brought to Scotland in the 16th Century by either King James the IV or V in order to instruct the Scots on the construction of superior blades. Swords later marked as such were renowned for their strength and flexibility. The name Ferrera became synonymous with the highest quality Scottish Basket Hilt swords.
