Three items: a first edition (review copy) of A Simple Plan, published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1993, hardcover with dust jacket, signed and inscribed on the title page in black ballpoint, "To Matt—Thanks so much for your interest in the book! Best, S. B. Smith, 3/31/94"; an uncorrected proof copy of A Simple Plan listing a "Tentative Publication Date: 7 September 1993," bound in plain tan wraps, signed and inscribed on the title page in black ballpoint, "To Matt—With all kind wishes, Best, S. B. Smith, 3/31/94"; and a one-page TLS signed "S. Smith," dated February 27, 1994, addressed to Mr. Stiller: "I wanted to thank you for your kind note about my novel, A Simple Plan. I'd be flattered to sign your copy of the book." Smith adds a brief handwritten postscript: "Let me know if you want an inscription, too. —S." In overall fine condition. Accompanied by the original hand-addressed mailing envelope, with Smith incorporating his signature into the return address field.

Smith's first novel, A Simple Plan, was adapted to film in 1998 and received widespread critical acclaim. Directed by Sam Raimi, the movie was recognized for both its strong acting and for Smith's adapted screenplay—actor Billy Bob Thornton and Smith both earned Oscar nominations for their efforts. The film's screenplay won a Broadcast Film Critics Association Award and a National Board of Review Award. Smith's second novel, The Ruins, which Stephen King called 'the best horror novel of the new century,' was also turned into a movie in 2008. Smith also wrote the screenplays for the films Siberia and The Burnt Orange Heresy.
