Scott Carpenter's screw-bound "Project Mercury Familiarization Manual: NASA, Manned Satellite Capsule," marked "Confidential" and prepared by the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, dated February 1, 1961 (revised date of May 1, 1961), Copy No. 6, signed on the cover page in pencil by Carpenter, with another hand adding his surname to the upper right corner. The manual consists of 13 sections: Introduction; Major Structural Assemblies; Environmental Control System; Stabilization Control System; Sequence System, Launch Through Retrograde or Abort; Escape and Jettison Rocket Systems; Posigrade Rocket System; Retrograde Rocket System; Sequence System, Landing Through Recovery; Electrical Power and Interior Lighting Systems; Communication System; Navigational Aids; and Instrumentation System. This manual intends to present a clear operational description of the various capsule systems and major components. Two types of usage are visualized. The first is as an orientation-indoctrination type document. The second as a reference document containing relatively detailed information on all systems and components. Housed in the original black McDonnell folder, "SEDR 104," marked "Confidential." In very good to fine condition, with general light overall wear from use. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Farthest Reaches.
