Scott Carpenter Mercury-Atlas 7 Mission 22 Photo
Scott Carpenter's Mercury-Atlas 7 Mission - Group of 22 Original NASA Photographs. On May 24, 1962, M. Scott Carpenter was launched into earth orbit aboard the Aurora 7 Mercury capsule by an Atlas rocket. He circled the earth three times, becoming the second American to do so. This was a scientific mission with tasks including the first study of the effect of weightlessness on liquids and earth photography. A malfunction of the automatic alignment system and Carpenter's busyness with his mission objectives caused a 400-kilometer overshoot of the planned splashdown site and a three-hour delay in his recovery. This vintage collection of 22 official NASA 8" x 10" glossy color and B&W photos are of Carpenter while in training for his flight as well as launch and in-flight photos. A couple also picture astronaut Wally Schirra who was Carpenter's backup crew and who would be the next American in space. Generally very fine condition. From the collection of renowned former physical trainer of the astronauts Joe Garino. This lot is accompanied by a signed certificate of authentication from Garino verifying its provenance.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
