Congressman, Speaker of the House, and vice president under U. S. Grant (1823–1885) who led the effort to pass the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, abolishing slavery. Two bold autographs on attractive Congressional stationery: an ALS, one page, 5 x 7.75, House of Representatives, Fortieth Congress letterhead, November 21, 1868, to "Miss Booth," in part: "Thanks for your cordial & welcome note, & also for the advance copy of the Bazar. The portrait, sketch & all are in every way satisfactory, the likeness better than usual in newspapers, & the pen portraits are general & warmly expressed"; and a hand-addressed and free franked 40th Congress mailing envelope, addressed by Colfax to journalist Benjamin Perley Poore, and franked in the upper right, "Schuyler Colfax, Speaker H. R." In fine condition.
