Regulus was bred by Lord Chedworth and born in 1739. Regulus was never beaten, and was considered to be the most superior horse of his time. He was also one of the greatest sires of the 18th Century, and died at the age of 26 at Low Garterly, Yorkshire. Matchem was one of the really great stallions of the 18th Century. He was a bay horse, born in 1748, bred by John Holme of Carlisle, and sold to William Fenwick of Bywell, Northumberland. He was a grandson of the Godolphin Arabian, and was far more successful as a stallion than as a racehorse. All his progeny were extremely successful racehorses.
