Dvarapala

A Dvarapala is an Indian and Southeast Asian guardian figure. The name derives from the Sanskrit terms ‘dvara’ (gate) and ‘pala’ (protector). In Hinduism and Buddhism the figure of the Dvarapala is a common architectural element. It usually comes in pairs and is often found on both sides of gates to palaces or temples as well as at village entrances where they have an apotropaic function. Dvarapalas are mainly depicted as warriors or fearsome giants with simple, archaic weapons.
