Scarce and Highly Desirable Factory Engraved Winchester Class B Side by Side Hammer Shotgun

Between 1879 and 1884 Winchester imported breech loading hammer shotguns from English Gunmakers W.C. Scott & Sons, Richard Rodman, C.G. Bonehill and W.C. McEntree. They were advertised and marked as "Match Gun", "Class A", "B", "C" and "D". The total of all types sold was approximately 10,000. They were sold through a store maintained by Winchester in New York City. This example is a 12 gauge Class B which features light floral scroll engraving on the locks, hammers, action, break lever and trigger guard. The side plates are engraved "WINCHESTER/CLASS B." and the rib is engraved "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. (CLASS B) NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.". The barrels have a single brass bead sight, are choked improved cylinder/modified and have 2 5/8 inch chambers with an extractor. Mounted on a multi-point checkered straight grain walnut forearm and Prince of Wales stock with smooth steel buttplate. Length of pull is 14 1/4 inches.

Finish: brown/casehardened

Serial Number: 1383

Fair, the barrels retain traces of the original brown finish with much of the Damascus pattern visible. The casehardened components have a silver/gray patina with some areas of darker discoloration. The hammer and tang screws are crude replacements. The engraving remains mostly sharp. There is a lacquer coating on the receiver and lock plates. The refinished forearm is fair with a large sliver absent from the right side of the forearm and a small sliver from the left side. The slightly undersized period replacement non-checkered buttstock is very good. Mechanically fine.
