Scarce and Highly Desirable Factory Engraved Winchester Class B Double Barrel 10 Gauge Shotgun

From 1879 to 1884 Winchester bought breech loading double barrel hammer shotguns from a number of English Gunmakers. These shotguns were imported, marked and sold by Winchester through a store maintained by Winchester in New York City. These shotguns were chambered in 10 and 12 gauge, and advertised and marked as "Match Gun", "Class A", "B", "C" and "D". The total of all types sold was approximately 10,000. The English Gunmakers were W.C. Scott & Sons, Richard Rodman, C.G. Bonehill and W.C. McEntree. This particular shotgun is a Class B which features light floral scroll engraving on the locks, hammers, action, break lever and trigger guard. Each lock is marked "WINCHESTER/CLASS B". The barrel features a single brass bead sight on the solid concave rib with a small wedge of scroll engraving at the breech and marked "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. (CLASS B) NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.". The underside of the barrels are marked "NOT FOR BALL" (left side) and with various British proof marks. Ahead of the forearm lug between the barrels is marked "1794". The water table is marked with a single Birmingham proof on each side. 2 3/4 inch chambers with extractor and mounted with a checkered walnut splinter forearm with lightly engraved release hardware and round knob pistol grip stock with a flat steel buttplate and gold initial shield.

Very good plus. 30% of the brown finish remains on the barrels with half of the Damascus pattern remaining. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth grayish patina with hints of original case colors in protected areas. The wood is also fine with some scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The checkering on the forearm is worn smooth on the underside, as well as areas on the stock wrist. The engraving and markings are clear. Mechanically fine. One will look a long time to find a better example!
