Scarce and Fine Charleville Model 1831 Breech loading Percussion Rampart Gun
Dated 1833 on the side of the forearm, arms of this size were often used by small defensive fortifications as a midway between the muskets and cannons of the area, with the power to deal with targets that fall outside the former's range, but don't justify a cannonball. Blade front and two leaf folding rear sights, the latter marked with a pair of small proof marks and a set of 4 notches, meaning unknown, on the underside just ahead of the forearm. The breechblock is of the swiveling type, which is locked in place with a swinging lever, and the tang is marked "M1831". Checkered hammer, with "Mre. Rle./ de Charleville" on the lock plate. Equipped with a solid metal forearm with hinged 5 1/2 inch pintle spike and a smooth straight wrist buttstock with a flat buttplate. Also included with the lot is a small display plaque, a pair of hand screws and 2 large metal washers.
