Scarce and Exceptional White Buff Pattern 1832 Enlisted Artillery Sword Belt with Belt Plate

Estimate: $1400 - 2250
This is a scarce example of the 3000 white buff sword belts with brass artillery belt plate purchased by the ordnance department from Robert Dingee in 1832. The belts were issued with the Ames Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword and had a distinctive, two-disk, brass belt plate linked by an s-shaped hook. The right plate has a relief cast spread eagle clutching eagles and olive branches and the left plate has crossed cannon barrels surrounded by "U" and "S". The belt has two buff leather keepers and a brass adjustment buckle on the right side and two brass rings that support the sword frog on the left. The fragile, two-piece, s-hook belt plate was replaced by the more robust two-piece "US" belt plate in 1839.
