Scarce and Desirable U.S. Spencer Navy Civil War Contract Model 1860 Repeating Rifle with Collins Sword Bayonet

Manufactured circa 1862 as one of only 709 rifles in this pattern, the entirety of which were purchased by the U.S. Navy, an acquisition that represents the first Government purchase of the Spencer Repeater. Blade front sight with German silver insert and a folding ladder rear sight, with a bayonet lug on the underside of the barrel a few inches back from the muzzle. The top of the receiver is marked "SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS/PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860." and the serial number is marked to the rear. Smooth straight wrist stock, with a steel forearm tip, 3 barrel bands, sling swivels and a steel buttplate. With an 1862-dated sword bayonet, 24 5/8 inches overall, with a 20 inch single fuller blade, faint Collins & Co. markings, and a brass hilt marked "144" on the pommel.

Fine, with a deep brown finish overall, showing a few scattered patches of pitting, mild handling marks and some spots of gray/lighter brown patina. The lock plate shows a few dark traces of the casehardened pattern, having turned a dark gray patina overall. The stock is very good, with some thin cracks and chips on the underside of the buttstock and scattered dings. The bayonet is good, with a mixed gray on the blade and mild wear overall. Mechanically very good.
