Manufactured in 1896, the second year of production and is 1 of the only first 5,000 manufactured with the flat-sided receiver. This solid frame rifle is equipped with a Lyman blade front sight with an ivory bead and an adjustable rear sporting sight. The top of the barrel is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A." ahead of the rear sight and "40-72 W.C.F." at the breech. The upper tang is marked "WINCHESTER/MODEL 1895" and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. Directly behind the trigger is marked "PAT NOV. 5, 1895/-- NOV. 12, 1895 --". Mounted with a smooth tapered forearm with an ebony forend insert and straight grip stock with a steel crescent buttplate.

Condition: Fine. The rifle retains 30% plus faded original blue finish with a smooth brownish and plum patina on the balance. The wood is also fine retaining most of the original oil finish and showing some overall scattered minor dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is fine. A solid example of a scarce flat sided Model 1895.
