Scarce and Desirable Butterfield Army Model Percussion Revolver
This is a solid representative example of a Butterfield percussion revolver as manufactured in 1862, one of only around 650 made in anticipation of an order from the 5th New York Cavalry Regiment. Silver plated brass frame with five-shot cylinder, octagonal barrel, attached loading lever and two-piece flared walnut grips. The revolver is equipped with a pellet priming device loaded by loosening a thumb-screw in front of the trigger guard. The barrel and cylinder are blued and the hammer, trigger and loading lever are casehardened. The brass top strap is marked: "BUTTERFIELD'S/PATENT/ DEC.11 1855/PHILADA" in three lines. The serial number, "117" is located on the left side of the barrel and loading lever and on the bottom of the frame and both grips.
BBL: 7 inch octagon

Gauge: 41
Finish: blue/ silver
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 117

Very good, with the barrel and cylinder showing an even crisp gray patina, some spotting and a small isolated patch of pin prick pitting on the forward end of the barrel around the muzzle. The frame retains 30% original silver plating concentrated around the side plates above the trigger guard but also in protected areas the balance is now even exposed brass exhibiting only a few handling marks. The refinished grips are very good with scattered pressure marks and a small chip at the toe of the right grip. All the markings are crisp. Mechanically fine. A rarely encountered secondary Civil War revolver in fine condition.
