This is a good example of a Sharps New Model 1859 Rifle from the Ordnance Department contract for 2000 rifles with factory set triggers issued on January 27, and February 6, 1862. These rifles were ordered at the request of Colonel Hiram S. Berdan to arm the two regiments of hand-picked marksman designated the 1st and 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters (USS/Berdan's Sharpshooters). The 2000 M1859 Sharps rifles purchased for Berdan's Sharpshooters had serial numbers between 54,374 and 57,574 with factory double set-triggers and mounts for angular socket bayonets. Most of the Berdan Sharps rifles were stamped with the Ordnance Sub-Inspector initials "OWA" (Orville W. Ainsworth)on the left barrel flat and a script "JT" (John Taylor) final inspection mark on the left stock flat. The rifle has a block front sight base/bayonet lug with nickel-silver front sight blade and R.S. Lawrence folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch. The lock is fitted with the R.S. Lawrence pellet primer and factory double set-triggers. The rifle has a walnut forearm with iron forend tip and walnut stock with iron patch box. The inside of the patchbox door is stamped with the Ordnance punch-dot inspection mark. The left barrel flat is stamped with the sub-inspector initials "OWA". The Ordnance "JT" final inspection mark is stamped on the left stock wrist. The top of the barrel is stamped with the three-line legend: "SHARPS RIFLE/MANUF'G CO./HARTFORD CONN." between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. "NEW MODEL 1859" is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The two-line Sharps 1848 patent date is stamped on the left side of the frame. The R.S. Lawrence two-line 1859 patent date is located on the lockplate below the pellet primer and the Sharps 1852 patent date is stamped on the lockplate behind the hammer. The serial number, "57398" is located on the upper receiver tang. Nearly all of the 2000 rifles purchased for Berdan's Sharpshooters saw hard service during the Civil War. The 1st and 2nd USS claimed to have inflicted more casualties on the Confederate Army than any unit of their size during the Civil War. Approximately 180 M1859 Rifles from the USS contract were issued to the 42nd Pennsylvania Infantry (Bucktails) in 1862 and used by that famous regiment throughout the war. The 2000 Sharps M1859 double set-trigger rifles are among the most famous and desirable of all Civil War weapons.
BBL: 30 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 52 percussion
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 57398
Condition: Good. The rifle shows the wear that is typical of a combat used weapon but is in completely original condition. The rifle has all of the features and markings associated with the 2000 rifle Berdan Sharpshooter contract. The barrel, receiver, patchbox and buttplate have a gray-brown patina with scattered age discoloration. The patchbox and buttplate have traces of the original case-hardened finish. The rifle has no pitting with the exception of the usual flash pitting on the percussion nipple, adjacent areas of the breech block and hammer face. The barrel markings are light but legible and the receiver and lockplate markings are clear. The stock and forearm have been lightly cleaned but remain in good overall condition. There are a number of small dents on the left side of the stock and two minor chips above and below the lockplate on the right stock wrist. The "JT" Ordnance final inspection mark on the right side of the stock is completely legible. This is a very solid example of a scarce and extremely historic Berdan Sharps Model 1859 Rifle. This rifle is a key but hard to find piece in any Civil War small arms collection.
