Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1894
Deluxe Winchester Model 1894 Takedown Rifle manufactured in 1923. The rifle is factory engraved with the rare Winchester No. 7 engraving shown on page 17 of the 1897 Edition of HIGHLY FINISHED WINCHESTER RIFLES and illustrated on page 217 of THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING by R.L. Wilson. No. 7 engraving is described as: "arabesque scrolls and fine border work, the engraving covering the two entire sides, scenes being omitted. The breech, bolt, butt plate, and forearm tip are engraved with scrolls; also the barrel at the breech". The forearm and pistol grip stock are fancy grain 1X walnut with a high polish piano finish and Style H checkering. The pistol grip has a black hard rubber cap embossed: "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS". In addition to the factory engraving and fancy stock and forearm, special order features on this rifle include: (1) 26-inch 1/2 round-1/2 octagon barrel, (2) matted barrel top, (3) sling swivel eyes on the forearm cap and stock, (4) Lyman, Beach style folding combination front sight and (5) Lyman folding combination rear sight mounted on the receiver tang. The rear sight is a standard sporting style sight. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver are blued and the hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The two-line factory legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21, 1894" is located on the left side of the barrel ahead of the rear sight. The oval Winchester "W/P" proof mark, normally stamped on the top of the barrel ahead of the receiver, is located on the left barrel flat below the rear sight. The proof mark is followed by: "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" and "- 30 W.C.F." on the left flat in front of the engraved scrollwork at the junction of the barrel and the receiver. The "W/P" Winchester proof mark is also stamped on the top of the receiver. The serial number "929061" is stamped across the bottom of the front edge of the receiver.
BBL: 26 inch part octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 30 WCF
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 929061
Condition:
Very fine. This scarce special order rifle retains at least 75% of the factory refurbished blue finish. The barrel retains 90% of the blue finish. The finish on the barrel band is thin and the magazine has scattered minor takedown marks. The barrel markings are crisp. The takedown collar has a silver-gray patina with blue in protected areas. The receiver retains 70% of the blue finish; wear is primarily on contact points on the top and bottom of the receiver. The hammer and lever retain 75% of the silver-gray case colors. The case colors on the buttplate have faded to a dark patina. The fancy walnut stock and forearm are very good with scattered minor handling marks. The stock has 90% or more of the high gloss piano finish; the forearm shows slightly more handling wear and retains 80% of the original finish. The checkering shows moderate handling wear. The engraving on the barrel and receiver is sharp. This is a very good example of a Special Order Deluxe Factory Engraved Model 1894 Takedown rifle with scarce Winchester No. 7 factory engraving and rarely encountered matted barrel.
