This is a desirable example of a Winchester Model 1895 .405 WCF Takedown Rifle that was manufactured in 1914. The rifle is chambered for the very desirable .405 W.C.F. cartridge and has the takedown barrel seldom found on Model 1895 Rifles. The 24 inch round barrel has a "Winchester Express" front sight with ivory bead and a rare Winchester Express rear sight with one-fixed and three folding leaves graduated from 100-400 yards. The rifle has a blued barrel, receiver, lever and checkered steel shotgun buttplate. The stock and forearm are straight grain walnut with a varnish finish. The forearm tip has an ebony inlay. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" in two lines below the rear sight. The caliber designation "405 W.C.F." is stamped on the upper left side of the barrel. Oval Winchester "W/P" proof marks are stamped on the top of the barrel and the receiver. The elongated, two-line, Winchester legend and patent dates are roll-stamped on the left side of the receiver. The upper tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1895/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG.IN U.S.A.PAT. OFF" in three lines. The serial number, "76143" is stamped across the bottom of the lower tang. British Nitro Proof marks and London "Crown/V" and "Crown/CP" proof and view marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel and on the takedown collar, left upper side of the receiver and on the top of the bolt. The number "56006" and some un-identified markings are stamped on the bottom of the stock behind the tang. The significance of the number and markings is unknown.
