Scarce Winchester First Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle Serial Number 237
This First Model features the distinctive dust cover held in place by grooved guides on either side of the top of the receiver, raised checkered oval finger grip on top of the dust cover and the lever latch with the visible screw threads. The tang is engraved "Model 1873", above the hand engraved serial number (237). (The aforementioned feature makes these rifles much sought after). The top barrel flat is marked with the two line address/King's Improvement dates ahead of the rear sight. The Model designation and serial number are engraved on the lower tang. Blade front and adjustable ladder rear sights, set trigger and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with steel end cap and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included). The lower tang of this rifle is pictured in Bill West's book "Winchester: Over a Century" on page 4-8 and 4-18.

Serial Number: 237
Condition: Refinished and period shortened. The barrel has been cut to its present length of 23" and the magazine tube is a replacement. The metal has been cold blued and now has a smooth brown patina. The wood has been refinished and remains very good with a few minor dings and dents. The forearm is a little loose. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent. Still, no matter the condition, it is still a hand engraved tang Model 1873 rifle which most collectors do not have.
