Manufactured circa 1879-1886. Whitney produced only about 1,000 of these carbines in both small and large frame, with most of the production believed to have been sent to South and Central America. This particular carbine is a large frame variation, and features a blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The top of the barrel ahead of the reproduction, replacement rear sight is marked with the two line Whitney address and "45-60", (the 4 covered by the rear sight), at the breech. The upper tang is marked with the two line patent marking and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. Blue finish with casehardened hammer and lever, saddle ring and stud mounted on the upper left rear of the receiver, full magazine tube and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent steel buttplate with compartment, (cleaning rod not included).
BBL: 22 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 45-60
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: M816
Condition: Refinished with half of the dull blue finish remaining, with areas thinning to brown and some scattered minor pitting under the finish on the receiver and barrel. Some of the pitting is under the blue finish. The hammer, lever and buttplate have a smooth dark brown patina. The undersized, revarnished wood is good. There is a minor 2 inch crack at the front of the forearm and overall there are some scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. There is a hole on the underside of the stock where a sling stub was. The barrel marking is fading and much of the upper tang marking is unreadable. The action is fine.
