Scarce Virginia Manufactory 2nd Model Percussion Conversion Musket

One of the approximately 14,000 Late Style Flintlock muskets manufactured by Virginia between 1818-1821 which was later converted to percussion, as many of these muskets were. Generally considered to be a secondary confederate weapon. Lock is marked vertically in an arch "RICHMOND/1818" behind the hammer and "VIRGINIA" in block letters over script "MANUFACTORY" ahead of the hammer. There is the number "5" stamped on some of the major parts. This musket has the major distinguishing feature of the rounded ends of the trigger guard and band springs located forward of the center and lower bands. The musket is mounted with a full length straight grip walnut stock with three barrel bands, low comb and flat iron buttplate. There is a sling swivel mounted on the middle barrel band and front of the trigger guard. Comes with an iron ramrod.

Fair. The metal surfaces have a smooth brown patina with signs of some scattered cleaning. The stock is fair with a large chip absent on the lower rear of the lock, a 1 inch crack on the left flat, crude filled repair along the left side front of the trigger guard, and overall minor dents, chips and scratches. Only part of Manufactory on the lock is visible, otherwise the markings are clear. The action is fine.
