Manufacturer: Unknown Model: Colette Gravity Feed
Introduced at the 1855 Paris World's Fair, Victor Colette's gravity feed pistol used a self contained 10.5mm cartridge, similar to the American-made Hunt Rocket Ball of the Volcanic repeater, in conjunction with a tube magazine running back across the top flat of the barrel to an elevating breechblock. To load, the operator simply tipped the arm upward and cocked the hammer, which automatically raised the block, picked up a cartridge, and dropped back into firing position. Fixed blade and notch sights on the magazine, which has a flip-open door in the front for loading and a manual-assist arm at the rear. Marked "VC471" on the underside of the barrel, with scroll engraving surrounding field scenes of dogs on the frame. Checkered grip, with an engraved metal cap on the flared butt.
BBL: 8 1/2 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 42
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: VC471
Condition:
Very good as modified, see below with traces of the original blue finish, concentrated on the barrel, with a mixed brown and gray patina overall and scattered light spotting and handling marks. The stock is fair, with some minor varnish loss, light dents and attractive grain. A plug has been installed in the breechblock, otherwise the arm is in good mechanical order.
