Scarce U.S. Springfield Model 1877 Trapdoor Rifle

This is a fine example of a scarce U.S. Springfield Model 1877 trapdoor rifle as manufactured in 1877. The model had a limited production with only approximately 25,500 produced. The left rear of the barrel is marked with the "V/P/eagle head/P" proof marks. It has a standard fixed front sight with the 1877 pattern rear sight that is marked on the side of the base; "1-5" (100-500 yards) and "6-11" (600-1100) yards on the face of the ladder. The upper left side if the base is marked "R" for rifle. It is fitted with the improved, low arch breechblock marked "U.S./MODEL/1873". It has the next pattern lock plate that is only marked with the "Eagle/Shield" motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD". It has the standard full length walnut stock with a single oval "ESA/1877" cartouche on the left side and a single "P" proof on behind the trigger plate. It is fitted with a double stacking sling on the front barrel band and a lower sling swivel on the front of the trigger guard bow. It has the smooth buttplate with no butt-trap compartment.
