Scarce U.S. Springfield Model 1830 Flintlock Cadet Musket

This is one of only 307 U.S. Model 1830 flintlock muskets manufactured by Springfield Armory circa 1830-1831. Out of the 307 manufactured, 154 had a 36 inch barrel, like this example, with the remainder having 40 inch barrels. These arms were specifically designed for use by West Point cadets after the use of Model 1817 artillery muskets and other shortened standard arms proved unsatisfactory. A stud for a socket type bayonet is positioned on top of the barrel near the muzzle and the barrel is fastened to the stock by three barrel bands secured by springs. The lock plate correctly measures 5 3/8 inches long and is marked "SPRING/FIELD/1830" vertically behind the hammer and an eagle/shield motif over "US" is stamped ahead of the hammer. The barrel tang has traces of the date with the rear of the barrel on the left side retaining traces of the eagle head and "V" proofs. The lock plate has a separate attached brass flash pan. A sling swivel is mounted on the middle barrel band and trigger guard. The front of the trigger guard is marked "CAY". Brown finish with casehardened lock plate and full length stock without markings. The buttplate tang is stamped "US" ahead of the screw. Included with the musket is a steel ramrod with trumpet shaped tip.

Fair as reconverted to flintlock with the barrel having been rechambered from its original 54 bore to 62 bore. The musket has a smooth mottled brown-gray patina with a few areas of minor pitting. The stock is very good with some chipping, a wood filled repair near the lock, a couple of hairline cracks and minor pressure dents. Mechanically fine.
