Scarce U.S. Springfield Armory Ward Burton Patent Single Shot Bolt Action Carbine

One of only 316 produced, this is a solid original example of a scarce Ward-Burton Calvary carbine. The Ward-Burton was one of the top 4 performers at the 1870 Breechloader Trials, alongside the Sharps, Remington and Allin, with the Allin system winning out. Blade front and folding ladder rear sights, with "U.S./SPRINGFIELD 1871" on the left side of the receiver and "WARD-BURTON PATENT/DEC.20.1859 FEB.21.1871" on top of the bolt. Smooth straight grip stock, with a saddle ring and bar on the left side next to a pair of faint cartouches, and "US" on the buttplate heel.

Serial Number: NSN

Good, with mostly brown finish overall, showing areas of gray patina, mild spotting and scattered handling marks. Shallow pitting is present, particularly on the bolt handling and trigger guard, heavier on the saddle ring bar. The stock is about good, with a number of dents, chips and scuffs. The cartouche is lightly visible. Mechanically very good. Military testing, ranging from merely harsh to deliberatively destructive, has left few of these weapons to be found in any condition.
