This is a very fine original example of a U.S. Model 1911 Automatic pistol that was manufactured by the Springfield Armory in January 1915. The pistol has the same rust blue finish found on pre-WWI Springfield Model 1903 rifles. The slide has the integral front sight found only on Springfield Armory slides. The pistol has the Springfield Type III long hammer with rounded edge. The small "S" stamped on most Springfield Model 1911 components is visible on the barrel bushing, slide stop, safety lock and the left side of the barrel lug. The Springfield Armory checkered walnut grips have the slight larger diamonds surrounding the stock screws. The two-tone lanyard loop magazine has the distinctive flanged edges that fold over the floor plate. The right side of the frame is stamped with the serial number "No 81918" behind the slide stop hole. "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" is roll-stamped on the left side of the frame in front of the trigger guard and a small Ordnance 'Shell & Flame' insignia is stamped between the magazine release button and the slide stop hole. The right side of the slide is stamped with the Springfield Eagle and Shield motif behind the ejection port and roll-stamped "MODEL OF 1911.U.S. ARMY" ahead of it. The left side of the slide is roll-stamped: "PATENTED APR. 20, 1897/ SEPT. 9, 1902. DEC.9, 1905. FEB. 14, 1911/ COLT'S PT. F.A.MFG.CO." in three unequal lines followed by "SPRINGFIELD ARMORY/U.S.A." in two lines. A 'Shell & Flame' insignia is roll-stamped behind the grip serration on the left side of the slide.
