Scarce U.S. Springfield Armory/ Burnside Rifle Company Spencer Model 1865 Carbine, Musket Conversion
One of approximately 1100 produced by Springfield Armory circa 1871-1874, using a group of Spencer Carbines that had been sent in for cleaning and repairs. The conversion consisted of new 32-1/2" barrels chambered for the .50 Springfield caliber, cleaning rods installed, and bayonet refitting. Fixed front sight with military model 1868 adjustable folding rear sight installed. The receiver retains the "MODEL 1865" and "SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE/ PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860/ MANUFACTURED AT PROV., R.I./ BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO." on top, with the Stabler cutoff switch inside the trigger guard and the saddle ring bar on a base extending from the left side. Smooth straight grip stock, with metal forearm tip, ramrod, two barrel bands, "EH" cartouche on the left wrist, sling swivels and smooth buttplate with "C" stamp on the heel.

Condition: Very fine, with at least 75% of the arsenal blue finish on the barrel, thinning along the high points and some dings. The casehardened components show more than half of their colors, with silvering along the edges and high spots. The wood is very fine with scattered pressure marks and dings. All markings are crisp. Some material is absent from the leading edge of the magazine tube, otherwise the action is excellent.
