Scarce U.S. North Model 1813 Army Flintlock Pistol
Model 1813 Flintlock Pistol made by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut, between 1813 and 1815. North manufactured 1, 626 Model 1813 Flintlock pistols for the Army and Navy; 626 of these pistols were not fitted with belt hooks and were delivered to the Army. The pistol has a round, smoothbore, barrel secured by an iron, "Wickham's Improvement", two-strap barrel band. The barrel band, side plate, trigger guard, backstrap and buttcap are iron. The edges of the flat lock plate are beveled ahead of the hammer and slightly rounded behind it. The lock has a convex hammer with heart-shaped top jaw aperture, tilted, detachable, brass flash pan with no fence and frizzen with flat toe. The stock is black walnut. The pistol is fitted with a hickory ramrod with flared tip. The lock plate is marked in front of the hammer with "S. NORTH" in downward curve above an Eagle and Shield motif. "U" is stamped on one side of the eagle and "S" is stamped on the opposite side. "MIDLN. CON." is stamped in an upward curve below the eagle. The inspector's initials "H.H.P" are located on the right side of the barrel above the flash hole. The proof and inspection marks "P/US" are stamped on the opposite side of the barrel parallel to the bore. The left stock flat is marked with a "V" above the Ordnance final inspection mark which consists of the script initials "LS" in an oval.

Condition: Good. The pistol shows moderate-heavy handling wear. The barrel, lock and iron furniture have a dark, untouched, patina The metal surfaces have light-moderate pitting with scattered patches of age discoloration. The lock markings and barrel inspection marks are very fine and legible. The stock is fine and shows moderate-heavy handling wear. The edges of the flats are slightly rounded and there are several old scratches on the left flat near the side plate. The inspection marks on the left flat are light but fully legible. Although the stock has handling wear it is free from cracks or other damage. The action functions well. This is a solid example of a scarce War of 1812 flintlock pistol.
