Scarce U.S. Martially Inspected Colt Model 1851 Navy/Army Contract Percussion Revolver
Manufactured in 1857, this revolver is one of Colt Model 1851's that was purchased by the U.S. Army prior to the Civil War. These U.S. Colt Model 1851's were primarily issued to the 1st and 2nd Cavalry Regiments and were used extensively in campaigns against hostile Indians prior to the Civil War. The top barrel flat is marked "-- ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD, CT.--", the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS / PATENT / U.S." and the cylinder is round engraved with the Texas naval battle scene. The top barrel flat at the breech is marked with the single initial sub-inspectors mark "C", "S" on the left side to the right and above the wedge screw and an "S" on the cylinder. The complete matching serial number is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, cylinder and backstrap with the partial number "9006" on the loading lever and arbor pin, and the period replacement wedge is un-numbered. Fitted with smooth one piece walnut grip with a faint oval cartouche on each side.
BBL: 7-1/2 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 36 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened/silver
Grips: cartouched walnut
Serial Number: 79006
Condition: Very good plus. The metal surfaces have a crisp, even smooth dark mottled patina with traces of blue in the barrel lug area. There are a few minor dents on the cylinder and the scene is mostly visible. The brass has an aged "mustard color" patina and there are a few minor dings on the butt. The grip is very fine with several minor dings on the bottom, a few minor dents and fits the straps extremely well. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. This is a well above average, original, example of the most sought after U.S. Colt Percussion Revolver variation!
