Manufactured in 1857, this is an example of a scarce Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver that was purchased by the U.S. Army prior to the Civil War. These U.S. Colt Model 1851's were primarily issued to the 1st and 2nd Cavalry Regiments and were used extensively in campaigns against hostile Indians prior to the Civil War, and were found in the 42,000 to 80,000 serial number range. The top barrel flat is marked "-ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT.-", and "COLTS/PATENT" over "U.S." on left side of frame. The left trigger guard shoulder is marked with a small letter "C" and "V" on the upper left front of the trigger guard bow. The cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval battle scene and an "A" and "S", and the letter "M" is marked on the top of the back strap. The complete matching serial number is marked on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, cylinder and back strap, with the partial serial number, "8097" is marked on the arbor pin, wedge and loading lever. Standard brass cone front and hammer notch rear sight and fitted with a smooth one piece grip, with a visible cartouche on each side and a "3" stamped on the bottom left and "5" on the right.
