Two thousand of the 3,400 produced were delivered to the Ordnance Department and the revolvers were issued to several Federal Cavalry regiments during the Civil War. The barrel has a missing front sight and the frame is grooved for sighting. The top strap is marked: "PETTINGILLS/ PATENT 1856" on the right side of the sighting groove and "PATD JULY 22, 1856 / & JULY 27, 1858", with "PANTED / NOV. 4 1862" in front of the trigger. Inspector initials are stamped on the barrel, frame, and cylinder. Fitted with two piece walnut grips with a faint original boxed cartouche on the left panel.

Condition: Very good. The revolver has a smooth brown-gray patina with some minor pitting (there is some deeper pitting on the cylinder). The full dimension grips are very good with faint cartouche and some minor handing marks and some chipping on the bottom edges. The action functions, but needs work has the cylinder does not lock properly.
