This is one of an estimated 8,700 Model 1855 rifles with two barrel bands manufactured by Harper Ferry for the U.S. government from 1857 to 1861. This example has iron mounts. The rifle is equipped with a blade front sight, three leaf rear sight and a bayonet lug on the right side of the barrel. The lock plate is dated "1861" at the rear and "U.S./HARPER'S FERRY" is stamped ahead of the Maynard primer door. The primer door has an American eagle. The barrel is also dated "1861" and is stamped "DVH" (double stamped) on top with "V/P/Eagle Head" proof on the left side at the breech. Both barrel bands are stamped with the letter "U." The stock has two cartouches on the left flat and the buttplate tang is stamped "US" with an illegible marking below the screw. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with the number "75" next to the patch box. The rifle has the iron tulip head type ramrod.

Fine. The rifle has an attractive polished bright appearance with some very scattered very light pitting. The reoiled wood is also fine with some scattered minor handling marks. The cartouches are legible. Mechanically excellent.
