Scarce U.S.  Fish Tail  Model 1840 Hall-North Type II Breech loading Percussion Carbine
This is an example of a U.S. Model 1840 Hall "fishtail" carbine that was manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut, from 1840-43, with a total production of 6,001. This carbine features the distinctive "fishtail" operating lever mounted ahead of the trigger guard. The breechblock is marked: "US / S. NORTH / MIDLtn / CONN. / 1841" and the left side rear of the barrel is marked with the inspectors mark "JCP". Fixed sights, trumpet head cleaning rod marked "341" and mounted with a smooth full straight grip stock with a flat iron buttplate. The Model 1840 Hall North Carbine was issued to the 1st and 2nd Dragoon regiments and saw service in the Seminole War and in the Mexican War. Examples of this important Dragoon carbine are difficult to find.

Condition: Good. The metal surfaces have a smooth dark patina with some light scattered pitting, heavier around the percussion nipple. The buttplate shows some minor pitting and overall moderate oxidation. The once sanded stock is fair with a small sliver on the upper left edge at the barrel band and overall scattered minor dings and dents. The hammer does not hold a cock position and the breechblock markings are partially faded away. A solid example of an important U.S. Military carbine.
