Scarce Type I Remington Civil War Single Shot Breech-Loading Split-Breech Carbine
Contracted by the U.S. government during the Civil War with approximately 5,000 of these carbines having been manufactured in 1865. It is unknown if any of these carbines were ever issued. This carbine features a blade front sight and a two position folding rear sight. The barrel was blue and the frame casehardened. The upper tang is marked "REMINGTONS, ILION N. Y. / PAT. DEC 23, 1863 MAY 3 & NOV. 16th 1864". Most of the components are marked with either the letter "B" or "J". Smooth walnut straight grip stock with single barrel band and a crescent buttplate. The left stock wrist is stamped with a "P" proof and PB and CGC cartouches and the comb is stamped with the inspector initials "CGC".

Very good plus. The barrel retains some scattered traces of faded original blue finish mixed with a smooth brown patina. The frame retains some strong amounts of silvered out case mixed with a smooth bright gray patina. There is extensive point pitting on the frame (mostly on the right side), with some scattered light pitting overall. The bore is bright and appears to have little or no usage. The wood is very fine with the exception of a repaired forearm (underside) and some scattered minor scratches and dings. The stock markings are clear. Mechanically fine. These Civil War split breech Remington carbines are seldom encountered in any condition.
