This is an example of a Two-Digit number (52) Colt Revolving Shotgun that was manufactured in 1860. Data from R.L. Wilson's "The Book of Colt Firearms" states that the factory ledgers list this as a full stock shotgun, possibly an error on the factory end. This large frame, .75 caliber (10 gauge) shotgun has the standard, 27-inch, round barrel, five-shot fluted cylinder, mushroom head hammer, iron trigger guard and buttplate and gutta-percha cleaning rod with nickel-silver tip. The forearm and fancy grain walnut stock are varnished. The forearm has a nickel-silver tip and oval wedge escutcheon. The barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard, hammer and buttplate have a blue finish. The loading lever is color casehardened. The serial number, "52" is visible on the trigger guard finial and on the bottom of the buttplate. "COLT'S PATENT" is roll-stamped in a half-circle over the patent date" "Nov. 24th 1857" on the left side of the frame. The sight groove in the frame top strap is roll-stamped: "COL. COLT HARTFORD CT.U.S.A." in a single line. Colt Revolving Shotguns were manufactured in limited numbers. Colt produced an estimated 600 of the large frame, .75 caliber, Revolving Shotguns between 1860 and 1863.
BBL: 27 Inch part round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 75 smoothbore
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 52
Condition: Fine. The shotgun retains 40% of the original high polish blue and color casehardened finish. The barrel retains 50% of the original blue finish with finish loss and shallow pitting on the lower edges of the barrel and under-rib. The frame has large amounts of high polish blue in protected areas with a brown patina on contact points. The cylinder, hammer, trigger guard and buttplate have a deep brown, lightly textured, patina. Traces of the original case colors are visible on protected areas of the loading lever. The markings on the top and left side of the frame are sharp. The fine action is tight and functions well. The stock and forearm are both in very fine condition; most of the original varnish finish remains intact and handling wear is minimal. This is a fine, original, example of a scarce, early production, large frame, Colt Revolving Percussion Shotgun.
