Annual Report of the Auditor and Treasurer of the Territory of Montana, for the Fiscal Year 1877. Helena, MT: Independent Steam Power Print. Small 8vo in printed paper wraps, 40 numbered pages, 9 contain brands. Very early brand registry for Montana Territory. In 1860, Granville Stuart started "rehabbing" lame oxen in Montana, supplying mining camps and others with beef. Some of the earliest cattle operations came to MT just after the Civil War, when Nelson Story drove in 600 head over the Bozeman Trail to fatten on good Montana grass. Half a dozen years later Montana had 245 registered brands. [Howard, J.K. Montana: High, Wide and Handsome. U. Nebraska Pr., 2003, p.103]
