Scarce Springfield Armory U.S. Model 1851 Percussion Cadet Musket with Long Range Sight

A total of 4,000 of these muskets were manufactured and issued to various cadet organizations. Model 1851 Cadet Muskets were carried by the Virginia Military Institute Cadets at the Battle of New Market, Virginia in 1864. The lock plate is marked "SPRING/FIELD/1852" vertically behind the hammer and is stamped with the eagle/shield above "US" in front of the hammer. The barrel tang is also dated "1852" and the left rear of the barrel is marked with the "V/P/eagle head" proofmarks. The long range rear sight has a base graduated 1-4 with a "US" marked sight ladder graduated 5-8. Full stock with three barrel bands, a brass "182" marked collection inventory tag on the right side of the buttstock immediately forward of the buttplate and the buttplate tang is marked "US" and "29".

Fair. The musket has a bright appearance with deep pitting on the rear section of the barrel and some very scattered minor pitting overall. The stock is good with chipping along the ramrod channel and a number of minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.
