Scarce Special Order Winchester Model 1886 .50 Express Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Rare Winchester Model 1886 rifle that was manufactured in 1917 and chambered for the .50-110 Express cartridge. The rifle has a full octagon barrel and full length magazine. The barrel has a dovetail mounted Sheard front sight with gold bead and a factory blank in the rear sight dovetail. A Lyman "N-Ni" rear sight is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The rifle has scarce special order factory double set triggers. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The barrel, magazine and receiver are blue and the forearm cap, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are casehardened. The left barrel flat is roll-stamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. PAT. OCT. 14. 1884. JAN. 20. 1885" ahead of the rear sight dovetail. The caliber designation, "50-EX." is stamped on the left barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. The oval "W/P" Winchester proofmark is stamped on the upper right barrel flat and the top of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped with the Third Style marking "MODEL 1886/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF." in three lines. The serial number "156081A" is stamped on the lower receiver tang. The accompanying factory letter states the rifle was shipped from the warehouse to order number 7900-57 on December 15, 1921.

Fine. The rifle is all original and retains 60% of the blue finish overall. The barrel has some minor edge wear and a small spot of lifted finish and light pitting behind the rear sight. There is handling wear with shallow pitting on the top and bottom of the receiver. The finish wear extends downward along the right side of the receiver to the loading gate. The upper and lower receiver tangs and the bottom and sides of the lever have shallow pitting. The buttplate has a silver-gray patina with some surface rust. The barrel and receiver markings are clear. The stock and forearm are both fine overall with moderate wear. This is a good original example of a rare late production Winchester Model 1886 Express rifle with special order double set triggers and Lyman receiver sight.
