Scarce Special Order Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Single Shot .22 Rifle with Cody Letter
Manufactured in 1900, this rifle features a globe front sight and no rear sight with a filler in the dovetail, and a mid range tang mounted peep sight. The upper left flat is marked with the two line address/patent dates ahead of the rear sight slot and "22 SHORT" at the breech, The bottom flat ahead of the forearm is marked "3". Two line patent marking on the lower tang behind the trigger and serial number at the end. All blue finish, double set triggers, and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber Winchester grip cap and nickel plated brass Swiss buttplate. The accompanying Cody letter verifies the serial number, rifle configuration, 22 Short caliber, barrel length, barrel shape "#3", October (typo probably meant octagon), single set trigger, plain pistol grip stock, graduated and globe sights, Swiss butt, received in and shipped from the warehouse on August 30, 1900 on order number 68190. The letter also states "Return & Repair May 2, 1912, #41809".

Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 40% original thin blue finish mixed with smooth plum patina. The receiver and lever have a smooth mottled brown patina with strong traces of original blue finish in protected areas. The buttplate retains 95% original nickel plating with some minor flaking and wear on the high edges. The wood is fine with a barely noticeable hairline age crack on the left side of the stock at the buttplate and overall a few minor dings and handling marks. The markings are sharp. The action is fine.
