Winchester Model 1876 Short Rifle chambered for the .50-95 Express cartridge. The rifle has a 22-inch round barrel, half-magazine and shotgun buttplate. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that identifies the 50 express caliber, 22 inch round barrel/half magazine length and shotgun butt and states that the rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on October 14, 1880. This early Second Model rifle has a dust cover with impressed oval thumbpiece and a guide secured to the receiver by screws. The barrel has a sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a sporting style rear sight. The barrel, magazine and receiver are blue and the hammer and lever are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut with a varnish finish. The left side of the barrel is stamped with London proof and inspection marks. The right side of buttstock is lightly stamped with a London Armoury Jas. Kerr round stamp. The top of the dust cover is engraved "WINCHESTER EXPRESS/.50 CAL. 95 GRNS." in two lines. The model designation "MODEL 1876" is roll-stamped on the upper receiver tang in fancy letters. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1865. OCTOBER 16. 1860" ahead of the rear sight. "50 CAL" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The caliber, "50-95", is stamped on the bottom of the cartridge elevator is script numerals. The serial number, "10804" is stamped in script on the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw. The Winchester Model 1876 Rifle chambered for the powerful .50-95 Express cartridge was popular with British colonial hunters. Winchester Model 1876 Short Rifles chambered for the .50 Express are very rare.

Condition: Fine. The rifle retains 60% of the original blue finish. Most of the blue finish is present on the barrel with thinning along the top and near the muzzle. The barrel markings are crisp. The receiver has handling wear on edges and contact points and retains substantial amounts of the blue finish in protected areas. The markings on the dust cover and receiver tang are crisp. Most of the faded case colors are present on the hammer and lever. The buttplate has a mottled gray-brown patina. The reoiled stock and forearm both remain fine overall with scattered dings and light-moderate handling wear. There is an old barely visible 1/4-inch plug repair present on the underside of the stock just ahead of the buttplate. This is a solid example of a rare and desirable, special order Winchester Model 1876 Express Short Rifle.
