Scarce Smoothbore Jenks ''Mule Ear'' Percussion Carbine, by N.P. Ames, NVSN, .54 cal., 24-1/2'' brown barrel, bright finish with brass bands, triggerguard and buttplate; walnut stock. Lockplate marked with Ames address, Springfield, Mass., as well as ''Wm. Jenks''. Top of barrel marked ''USN/RC''. Mfg'd from 1843-1846 with just over 4000 produced. Condition is very good retaining approx. 30% thinning brown finish to barrel; sideplate and lever retain little original case hardened colors and have overall moderate patina with light pitting. Brass components show light even patination with bands missing screws. Stock shows faint cartouches and oil darkening near lock. Stock hsa been cut and then repaired beneath rear barrel band; barrel band retaining screws are missing. Rear lock screw appears to be a later replacement. Action is crisp, bore is fair to good.
