Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Model: New Model No 3
Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 Single Action revolver with nickel-plated finish, seven-inch barrel and attachable walnut shoulder stock. This Australian Model was probably issued in Western Australia where it was common that the guns were not stamped with the broad arrow proof. The yoke of the stock is properly stamped with the broad arrow proof also typical of Australian stocks. The screws enter the wood from the right and not the left. The barrel latch is blue, the hammer and trigger have a casehardened finish and the black two-piece grips are checkered hard rubber with S&W monograms on the top flats. The barrel has a half-moon front sight and a fixed rear sight is located on the barrel latch. The attachable stock is highly figured walnut with an oil finish. The stock has a nickel-plated yoke and tang and black checkered hard rubber buttplate with the S&W monogram in the middle. The barrel rib is roll-stamped with the two-line S&W legend and patent dates with a Maltese Cross at either end. The full serial number "13083" is stamped on the butt, the rear face of the cylinder, the bottom of the barrel latch and the rear of the barrel. All of the visible serial numbers match. The attachable stock is stamped with the serial number "13069" on the right side of the yoke. All S&W New Model No.3 revolvers with attachable stocks are scarce. It is 100% common for the guns and stocks not to match.
BBL: 7 inch solid rib
Stock:
Gauge: 44 S&W
Finish: nickel
Grips: black hard rubber
Serial Number: 13083
Condition:
Very good. The revolver retains 85% of the original nickel plated and casehardened finish. There are several small spots of pitting on the lower part of the barrel near the muzzle and above one chamber on the cylinder. There are three small spots of age discoloration on the left side of the frame. The hammer and trigger guard retain 90% or more of the casehardened finish with well-defined case colors. The walnut stock is very good with scattered light handling and storage marks. The stock yoke retains about 85% of the plated finish with some scattered flaking. The buttplate is excellent. The grips are very good-excellent with some light handling wear. The action functions well and the markings are sharp. This is a very good example of a scarce S&W New Model No. 3 Australian Police Revolver.
