This is one of an estimated 2,970 Sharps Model 1853 Slant Breech Sporting Rifles manufactured from 1854 to 1859. The barrel has a dovetail slot for a front sight, is equipped with a R.S. Lawrence patent marked ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards and is marked "SHARP'S RIFLE/MANUFG. CO./HARTFORD CONN." ahead of the rear sight. The lock plate is marked "SHARP'S/PATENT/1852" behind the hammer and the upper tang is marked "SHARP'S/PATENT/1848" ahead of the serial number. The rifle has the pellet primer system, a saddle ring on the lower tang and double set triggers. The upper tang is tapped for a sight. Smooth straight grip stock and forearm with a pewter forearm tip, iron patch box numbered to the gun and carbine style buttplate. The barrel is numbered to the gun.

Good. The rifle has a smooth mottled brown-gray patina. The wood is very good with some chipping, a couple carved initials and some pressure dents and scratches. Action does not function due to broken hammer spring.
