Produced between 1854 and 1859, it is estimated that about 2,970 of these Sharps Model 1853 Slant Breech Sporting Rifles were manufactured. Blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight absent of graduation markings. The top barrel flat is marked "SHARP'S RIFLE / MANUFg. CO. / HARTFORD CONN." ahead of the rear sight. The bottom of the barrel under the forearm is marked twice with the matching serial number. The lock plate is marked "SHARP'S/ PATENT/ 1852" behind the hammer, the upper tang "SHARP'S/ PATENT/ 1848" followed by the serial number, with a brass gas ring, Lawrence pellet primer system and double set triggers. Mounted with a straight grip walnut stock and forearm, with a pewter forearm tip, brass patch box numbered to gun, and brass buttplate, also numbered to the gun.

Condition: Very good, with a smooth dark mottled patina overall, with traces of the casehardened pattern visible on the receiver. The brass shows signs of period cleaning. Stock is good, with some cracks on the forearm, extenxive pressure dents, scuffs and varnish loss. Mechanically fine.
